Postcard From Leipzig, Germany

Posted on October 10, 2016September 27, 2017 by emiglia

1. Thomaskirche (Saint Thomas Church), where Johann Sebastian Bach famously worked as a Kapellmeister (music director) from 1723 until his death in 1750. Listening to the organ here made me feel as though my Bach-loving father was making the journey with me.

2. Bayerischer Bahnhof Gasthaus & Gosebrauerei, a former train station in Leipzig that has since been converted into a brewery specializing in sour Berliner Weisse and local Leipziger Gose beers.

3. Leipziger Gose, a sour beer seasoned with salt and coriander that nearly disappeared from existence until recently. Today, two different breweries in Leipzig make their own gose.

4. Friedliche Revolution or the Peaceful Revolution, which took place in Leipzig in 1989, is omnipresent. As Leipzig was part of East Germany until the fall of the Berlin wall, the repercussions of this revolution are particularly palpable in the small city.

5. Nikolaikirche (Saint Nicholas Church) is one of Leipzig’s major churches, first built in 1165, though the neoclassical interior dates to the late 18th century. It was here that the Monday Demonstrations of the Peaceful Revolution began, during which it was said that this church was the head of the revolution, and the body the city center.
