Friday Reads: The New York Public Library

Posted on September 7, 2018 by emiglia

… a great book should leave you with many experiences and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives reading it. – William Styron (1925 -) Writers at Work

As someone who adores books and adores libraries perhaps even more, it might seem strange that I’ve never belonged to the New York Public Library. I remember going as a child only once, and while my Actress sister belonged there when she lived in NYC and I accompanied her as far as the lobby a handful of times, the lion-flanked steps of the Library have never been my home.

…the reading of good books is like a conversation with the best men of past centuries- -René Descartes (1596-1650), Discourse on the Method

But I do love the plaques that have been added to the sidewalk leading up to it: little bites of history and culture.

Truth exists. Only falsehood has to be invented. – Georges Braque (1882-1963), Le Jour et La Nuit

I wonder what it says about me that two of the three I photographed are French.
