paris statue - charles de gaulle

Monday Postcard of Parisian Statues

Posted on July 16, 2018September 26, 2018 by emiglia

1. Charles de Gaulle might be a familiar name to most people visiting Paris given that it’s also the name of our largest airport, but de Gaulle is first and foremost the General-turned-President responsible for the early 5th Republic of France (and for the fall of the Vichy Regime after the Liberation of France at the end of World War II). This statue of the famously 6’4 General can be found just in front of the Grand Palais.

2. This isn’t the first time I’ve featured this literary statue on my blog, but it remains one of my favorites. The statue of Le Passe-Muraille comes from Marcel Aymé’s novella about a man who suddenly develops the ability to walk through walls. The statue is located just in front of the Montmartre address where the fictional character lived.

3. This gorgeous statue of Saint Michael trampling Satan can be found above the fountain on the place of the same name – Saint-Michel.

4. All of the statues within the Tuileries Gardens are technically part of the Louvre collection, including this one.

5. This statue, known only as “The Man with the Raised Arm,” features a veiled man and is the work of sculptor Olivier Brice, who died in 1989. You can find it on Place de Caire.
